Ain't I a Woman: A Complicated Story of Women's Suffrage in Black and White

To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment, the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site and the Sewall–Belmont House & Museum, along with the National Archives Experience, will present a panel discussion on the women’s suffrage movement and its lasting impact on race and gender in the United States.

The panelists will draw from the unique historic parallel perspectives of the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum and the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site legacies to analyze the women’s rights movement.

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Ida Jones, an adjunct faculty member in the Department of History at Howard University and co-editor of the Black History Bulletin (the Negro History Bulletin).

Entrepreneurship Is On The Rise - And Women Are Leading The Way!

Join entrepreneur Karetta Hubbard as she discusses the many obstacles
blocking the publishing landscape. She will also discuss and answer
questions about her book Satan's Chamber and Fuze Publishing.


Karetta will be joined by Andrea Fuller, the founder and CEO of
MindFarm, the go-to resource for interim executives for strategic and
operating needs, and she is a part-time stand-up comic.


Rounding out the panel is Karen Finney, an independent consultant
working with political and corporate clients in the United States and
globally in the areas of political and communication strategy, and
public affairs. Karen is also a political analyst for MSNBC and a
contributor to Politico and the Huffington Post.


Susan Scanlan, The Women's Research and Education Institute's
President, will moderate this outstanding panel.  In November 2005,
Ms. Scanlan was elected chair of the National Council of Women's
Organizations, a coalition of over 240 progressive women's groups
representing more than 12 million American women.

Women's Financial Planning expert Eleanor Blayney will lead this discussion on financial planning. The program will consist of three financial planning workshops and a book signing for Eleanor Blayney's new book Women's Worth: From Financial Capacity to Confidence. All proceeds from the book sales will be donated to Sewall-Belmont!

Book Talk: A Volume of Friendship

McGinnis, editors of A Volume of Friendship: The Letters of Eleanor Roosevelt and Isabella Greenway, will discuss their book about the life-long friendship between Eleanor Roosevelt and Isabella Greenway. Bring your lunch for this brown-bag partnership with the U.S. Capitol Historical Society.

Book Program: Flying For Her Country

Amy Goodpaster Strebe will discuss her book Flying for Her Country: The American and Soviet Women Military Pilots of World War II. Book signing and reception to follow. Special guests for the evening will include former members of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP).

The cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Ticket price includes a copy of the book.

Journey Toward Equality Bus Tour

This docent led tour of the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum, the Frederick Douglass House, and the MAry McLeod Bethune House highlights the early advocacy of human rights. The tour will meet ay 9:45am at the Eastern Market Metro and the bus will depart at 10:00am.

The cost is $10 for adults and $8 for children.

An Evening with Cokie roberts: Celebrating women's progress in journalism

Cokie Roberts is not only a celebrated journalist, but also the author of We Are Our Mothers' Daughters and Founding Mothers. Roberts will share her personal thoughts and insights into her work, followed by a question and answer period, book signing, and reception.  Krissah Williams Thompson of The Washington Post will also share her insight into women's progress in the field of journalism.

The cost is $10 for non-members and free for members. Books will be available for purchase in the Museum Shop.

Join the Sewall-Belmont House & Museum and Empowered Women International to celebrate Women Artists as Change Makers. The evening will include the exhibit opening, Artist Market Place and performance by Kate Campbell Stevenson as Eleanor Roosevelt.

Participating artists are graduates and members of the EWI's Art Business Incubator and Micro-enterprise.  The program creates entrepreneurial opportunities and sustainable livelihoods for immigrant, unemployed, and low income women artists.

Alice Award 2009

Each year, the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum pays tribute to distinguished women who have made outstanding contributions in breaking barriers and setting new precedents for women. The Alice Award is named after Alice Paul -- suffragist, human rights activist and founder of the National Woman’s Party. This year we are pleased to recognize Hillary Rodham Clinton for her lifetime commitment to public service. As an attorney, children’s advocate, First Lady, US Senator and Secretary of State, Secretary Clinton's accomplishments are unique in American history. We honor her as a role model for all women and also as an advocate for historic preservation.

Phyllis Stewart Pires, Director of Community Experience for SAP. Pires has engineered nationally recognized corporate-sponsored childcare programs at Cisco, Disney, Apple Computer and PG&E.

Jocelyn Samuels, Vice President for Education and Employment, National Women's Law Center. Samuels spearheaded coalition efforts to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and is currently involved in work to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.

For the annual "Take Our Daughters to Work Day," start off your morning at the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum. Come enjoy a continental breakfast and hear Nell Merlino, who in 1993 created "Take Our Daughters to Work Day," and author of "Stepping Out of Line: Lessons for Women Who Want it Their Way...In Life, In Love, and At Work". Kids can participate in craft activities. Books are available for purchase with signing opportunities.

Through her own experiences, personal interviews, and research, Dee Dee Myers explores why women should rule the world and how the world would be different if they did.

Dee Dee Myers served as the White House Press Secretary during President Clinton's first term. She was the first female and youngest person to hold that position. Today she is a political analyst and commentator, contributing editor to Vanity Fair, and lecturer.

Betsy Myers, former Chief Operating Officer and Chair of Women for Obama, Obama for America campaign will introduce Ms. Myers on March 19.
